Wales
A decision is scheduled for Wednesday, January 21 on a hydro proposal at Cwm Cynfal in Eryri National Park. The project would divert up to 70% of the Afon Cynfal away from Rhaeadr y Cwm, and the site has a conservation designation for rare habitats and species. Save Our Rivers and partners are urging paddlers and river people to speak up now. The action link is here, to add your voice.

Aniol Serrasolses and Serrasolses Brothers River Co. have Mighty Futaleufú weeks running. It’s a progression-focused, big water coaching week on one of the most iconic rivers on the planet. More info here.

In the Pacific Northwest, Zach Collier at Northwest Rafting Company is making river safety training more accessible through one day Safety and Rescue Clinics out of Hood River.

Washington State
The proposed Chehalis River flood retention project is in public comment through February 4. The Environmental Impact Statement says it would eliminate about 6.6 miles of kayaking and rafting access. American Whitewater is opposed. There is a public meeting January 13 in Aberdeen.
Norway
On the Raundalselva River, there was a big win against a plan to divert the river underground through flood tunnels tied to a hydropower project, which would have seriously changed a world-class kayaking run. Instead, the Voss municipality chose flood protection without the tunnels and without hydropower development.
Worldwide
The International Canoe Federation has a packed 2026 calendar starting with the Regata Internacional del Río Negro which runs from January 7-18 in Viedma, Argentina, celebrating its 50th anniversary. The Mangahao Open is January 17 in New Zealand, followed by the New Zealand Open, an ICF World Ranking race, on January 18. Slalom races continue in Underberg, South Africa from January 24 and 25.

The Packrafting Association of New Zealand (PRANZ) National Meetup runs from January 7–11 in Murchison. Five days of packrafting, skill-sharing, and community laps.
Chile
Futa River Fest is happening January 9th-10th on the Futaleufú River. Patagonia’s in full swing, and the Futa is the kind of place that pulls paddlers in from everywhere.
Colorado
American Whitewater and partners are pursuing stream access legislation in the 2026 session. In plain terms, it’s about making it clearer that people can float rivers and also do basic safety moves like scouting and carrying around hazards when they have to. Colorado’s session convenes January 14th.
Idaho
The North Fork Championship is officially back June 9–11, 2026 in Banks, Idaho!
